Osaka Expo: Kundo Koyama Pavilion

The Kundo Koyama Pavilion at the Osaka Expo.

“Sardines,” the fish at the very bottom of the food chain that are eaten most often; an egg chandelier; scales and shopping carts that make you feel the life behind the food; and the “Life Register,” where you transform into the very life you’re consuming. Each of these was conceptual and left a lasting impression on me.

Reflections on the future of food inspired by Sukiyabashi Jiro, a kitchen that recreates flavors, future freezing technologies, sweets designed by children to bring happiness, and a single umeboshi to be presented in 2050. The “Future” section is also unique and sparks the imagination.

The film concludes with an epilogue scene showing everyone gathered around the dinner table.

An exhibition that explores the interconnectedness of life underlying our daily lives and raises questions about its future.

It was packed with content and well worth watching.

In particular, “EARTH FOODS 25,” which brings together the wisdom of Japanese cuisine, was excellent! It features a selection of foods unique to Japan—such as seaweed and fermented foods—that have been passed down through generations, and proposes new dishes and packaging that make use of them; you can sense the deep thought and creativity behind each and every one.

It was an exhibition I wanted to take my time to enjoy.
