- [Announcement] “Let’s talk about children who succeed without teachers, classes, or textbooks. Tokyo Inter High School (TIHS) provides an environment for self-directed learning!”
For the online symposium on Wednesday, October 30, we will be welcoming Mr. Katsuhiko Watanabe, Principal of Tokyo Inter High School.
Founded in 2000, Tokyo Inter High School is the Japanese branch of Alger Independence High School, which is accredited by the State of Washington in the United States.
Taking advantage of an online learning environment, many students from all over the world and across Japan enroll in our program to earn a U.S. high school diploma. Students study at our campus in front of Shibuya Station. Since we operate on a fully credit-based system with monthly enrollment and graduation, we recently had a graduate who, at the age of 12, graduated this past August and went on to begin their freshman year at a U.S. university in September.
A key feature of the program is that students graduate by earning the 24 credits required by Washington State through a self-directed learning system, following a curriculum they design themselves. Since students can study in either English or Japanese (multiple languages are also available), they can earn credits toward a wide variety of certifications, including the Eiken Test, the Japanese Language Proficiency Test, the Mathematics Proficiency Test, the High School Equivalency Certificate, and national professional licenses.Preparation for the SAT, TOEFL, and university entrance exam prep courses also counts toward credits. Part-time jobs and volunteer activities chosen by the student are counted as practical learning credits. Since the entire process—from creating a personalized study plan to implementation, evaluation, and credit certification—is 100% self-directed, a dedicated learning coach provides one-on-one support from enrollment through graduation.
TIHS creates a “learning system,” “individualized coaching support,” and a “community of challengers” to nurture independent learners who will thrive globally by leveraging IT and AI. We invite you to join us.
