On Saturday, September 23, we held the event “Let’s Learn About Traditional Japanese Festivals (Part 1): Let’s Look for Ark’s Seven Autumn Herbs.”

Have you heard of the Seven Autumn Herbs? They’re beautiful flowers that bloom in the fall (unlike the Seven Spring Herbs, most of them aren’t edible). You might even come across some flowers with names you’ve never heard before. Once you’ve checked out their colors and shapes, let’s set out on a hunt for the Seven Autumn Herbs!

First up was the Four Seasons Garden—a garden filled with Japanese plants. There might not be many flowers there…? “They’re around here! The leaves look like this.” With those hints, we set out to find lots of flowers (some of which hadn’t bloomed yet).

Let’s go on a Seven Herbs hunt in the rooftop garden. 1, 2, 3, 4… Did you find all seven? Actually, there was one plant missing from Ark’s garden, so six is a complete set! Try looking for the remaining one (kudzu) near your house or in other places.

The cotton bolls we’ve all been tending to have grown quite a bit. It won’t be long before they burst open…?? I can’t wait!

The next GREENWORKSHOP will be held on Saturday, October 28: “Let’s Recreate Plants Using All Five Senses—Find Your Favorite Flowers and Plants in Ark’s Garden and Try Making 3D Flower Arrangements!” We hope you’ll join us! *We’ll be welcoming artist Ikuko Matsuo as a special guest.
