“Samaritaine,” a long-established Parisian department store

"Samaritaine," a long-established Parisian department store founded in 1870, is located at the foot of the Pont Neuf.

Although it was acquired by LVMH, it closed in 2005 due to deterioration. I heard that it reopened in 2021, 16 years later, so I went to see it just to check out the building.

The Pont Neuf building, designed in the Art Nouveau style. It features a glass ceiling, an open-riser staircase, and murals and decorations adorning all four walls.

And then there is the Rivoli Pavilion, characterized by its undulating glass façade. The surrounding Parisian cityscape and the blue sky are reflected in the curved glass. The Rivoli Pavilion renovation was undertaken by SANAA, led by Kazuyo Sejima and Ryue Nishizawa.

While both feature a bright, open atmosphere bathed in natural light, they blend tradition and modernity.

They're both beautiful.

It seems that, in preparation for the 2024 Paris Olympics, luxury brands are renovating historic buildings in Paris one after another.
