With the cooperation of Thermo Fisher Scientific Japan Group (hereinafter referred to affectionately as “Thermo Fisher”), we held a free trial session for the Kids Creative Institute.

Let's explore the secrets behind handwashing using the everyday items we all have on hand: water and oil!

Water and oil—when put in the same cup, they don’t mix but stay separate.
Even though these two liquids don't mix, can oil be removed with water?
How can I remove oil more effectively than with water?

What is the best liquid for thoroughly removing chili oil (oil)?
We conducted an experiment using nine types of liquids—including laundry detergent (many people predicted it would work), hand soap (with the prediction, “It might work!?”), and lemon juice (with the prediction, “It might work a little, I guess?”)—for a total of eight types plus water.
I took a close look to see exactly how the stains came out.

This soap worked the best (at removing stains)! This one removed a little bit! This one didn't work very well…

Spending the entire time conducting experiments to observe all the liquids, or
Some groups arranged the items in the order in which the stains were removed to present the results more clearly.

I heard that liquids that effectively remove grease (like laundry detergent, dish soap, and so on) contain an ingredient called a surfactant.
"Surfactants" help mix oil and water, so oil that was hard to remove with water alone comes off much more easily.
Soap works just as well for removing dirt when washing by hand!
For example, since the coronavirus is covered by a lipid membrane, it comes off really well with "sponge-like cleaning materials"!
So, when you wash your hands with soap, they get cleaner than when you wash them with just water, right?
After learning about the importance of soap, let's use the whole room to hunt for germs!

Real viruses are invisible to the naked eye. We used a special liquid that glows under a black light to simulate a virus and examined which areas of the hand would become contaminated if the hand were dirty.
In this experiment, we focused on a somewhat harmful virus, but we humans cannot survive without viruses and bacteria.
Let's not think of all viruses and bacteria as bad—let's work together and make the most of every day! (by Dr. Sho)
Thank you to everyone who participated!
I look forward to seeing you again sometime.
