In August 2022, we hosted “Professor Black Lab”—who is both a college professor and a comedian—for our science program!
The star of this story is the “magnet.”
What Are Magnets?
First, let's experiment to see what it sticks to.
From among the various tools and materials lined up on the desk, we’ll look for things that stick to a magnet.
Well, this is where the real action begins.
We'll use "neodymium magnets"—the world's strongest magnets—to move the boat.
Boat racers are vegetables.
Daikon radish, carrots, cucumbers, cherry tomatoes, eggplant, watermelon, bell peppers, potatoes, shimeji mushrooms.
When you bring a neodymium magnet close to the vegetables in the boat,
As the vegetables repel the water, they begin to move little by little.
The vegetable athlete moves slowly, sooo slowly.
This is an experiment to see which vegetable athlete is the fastest.
There seems to be a trick to how you bring the magnets close together.
We'll also practice how to steer using neodymium magnets.

The final event was a team boat race competition.
Steer your boat with neodymium magnets and head for the finish line!
The representative players from each team enter the arena.
On your marks, get set, go!
Slowly, slowly, bit by bit, bit by bit, the boat moves forward.
Pass the neodymium magnet baton and reach the finish line!
In this research study, scientists discovered a new property of magnets—one that goes beyond just sticking together.
I wonder what I'll discover next?

I look forward to seeing you again in September!
