[September 4] “New Possibilities for Education Through XR: A Pilot Study of Virtual Classroom Instruction Aimed at Providing Optimal Learning Experiences for Individual Students and New Teaching Methods”

This week's Learning of Tomorrow Online Symposium will focus on the pilot project for virtual classroom lessons conducted by NEC and iU.

In recent years, universities have been shifting from the traditional model, in which faculty members impart knowledge to students, to a model in which students take the initiative in their learning through dialogue with faculty members. On May 30, NEC and iU announced that they had conducted a pilot experiment using virtual classroom instruction with the aim of providing each student with an optimal learning experience and introducing new educational methods.

The initiative aims to support the development of instruction and course design tailored to individual students, reduce the workload on faculty, and—by utilizing VR—deliver classes that offer a more immersive experience than online education using videos and other media, thereby enhancing students’ motivation to learn and their level of understanding.

The two parties will conduct further pilot tests, analyze individual student trends based on the data collected during these tests, and utilize this information to create a system that accelerates both faculty-led student guidance and students’ independent learning. Furthermore,by leveraging advanced technologies such as XR and local 5G—which enables high-speed, high-capacity, low-latency communication—we aim to expand the venues and opportunities for learning and provide new ways of learning in the metaverse era.

He will discuss the overview of the pilot project and future prospects. We hope you will join us.
