- Japan’s Oldest Stone Museum
Japan's Oldest Stone Museum @ Nanmura Town, Kamo District, Gifu Prefecture.
It is not "Japan's oldest 'Stone Museum,'" but rather "Japan's oldest 'Stone' Museum."
This stone museum was established after Japan's oldest rock, dating back 2.05 billion years, was discovered at the Hisui Gorge on the Hida River, near the museum.
The exhibition hall in the basement features fun interactive elements, such as an elevator that takes visitors on a journey back in time 2.05 billion years.
But wait! As I looked through the exhibits, it seems that in 2019, a new “oldest rock in Japan”—dating back about 2.5 billion years—was discovered in Tsuwano Town, Shimane Prefecture. That rock was on display as well, but since the museum also featured the Earth’s oldest rock, which is about 4 billion years old, I found myself thinking—while enjoying the exhibits—that perhaps they should rename it the “Museum of the Earth’s Oldest Rocks.”
