On Sunday, June 5, we held the “STEAM Workshop: Measure and Create—Motors Edition” (Program provided by #michica / Space design by #Fukasawa Art Laboratory).

The third installment in the series (the last one!) is all about motors!
Motors are used in all sorts of things around us—cars, fans, clocks, automatic doors, and more.
This time, we tried our hand at creating projects using circuits with motors!
First, let’s build a circuit that makes an LED light up, and then add a switch to it.
What happened to the LED when you pressed the switch?
What are the voltages when the light is on and when it's off, respectively?
I measured it with a tester and recorded the results.
It's finally time to use the motor!
First, let's try generating electricity (!?) using a motor.
Remove the batteries you've been using without a second thought, and build a circuit using only an LED and a motor.
When I turned on the motor… it lit up!!
I was impressed by how they actively tried to figure out on their own how to make the motor—which was a little hard to turn—turn more easily.
I also tried my hand at a circuit that combines a motor and a tact switch.
This is the most complex circuit in this series.
If I press the tact switch, will the motor start spinning??
At the end of the workshop, there’s time to freely combine the circuits with a variety of materials to create your own projects.
You can combine paper clips like legs to create things that move in fun ways, or
Take advantage of the fact that the tip of the motor spins to combine it with all sorts of things, like bell-shaped ribbons and balancers!
We've created a fun project that makes use of how motors work.

He has served on various government committees, including the Information and Communications Council of the Ministry of Internal Affairs and Communications, as well as the NHK Central Broadcasting Program Council. He also serves as a director of the Digital Signage Consortium, among other roles. He holds a Ph.D. in Policy and Media.
His publications include *Turning On Children’s Creativity!*, *What Are Smart Kids Doing on Their Smartphones?*, *The Forefront of Online Education in Japan: Considering Learning in the Post-COVID Era*,“What Is Programming Education? 45 Questions Parents Want to Know,” and “Declaration on Digital Education.” He has also provided supervision for numerous works, including “Ah, I See! Programming Education for Parents and Children Through Manga.”
