"Drawing Snowflakes" (Elementary School Class) in Takeshiba

We held a painting workshop (program provided by Ikuko Matsuo)!

This time, it will be held online.

Together with Ms. Iku-chan, everyone drew snowflakes in their own spaces.

Snow… Have you ever seen it? Have you ever touched it?

The session began with a conversation about the snow: “There was that day the other day when it snowed a lot, wasn’t there?”

So… what shape is snow, anyway??

"A circle?" "A hexagon!" (Oh! There's a kid who knows the answer!)

First, let's draw the shape of the snow with a white crayon.

White crayons on white drawing paper???

"I can't see it!~" said Teacher Iku-chan. "Let's try to look at things that are hard to see today~."

One child even taught me that “if you shine a light on it, you can see it!”

Would a long, narrow shape be okay?

By all means! Please give any ideas you come up with a try.

"That's the best part!" said Teacher Iku-chan.

We’ll create and paint the color of the sky as everyone’s snowflakes fall. While Ms. Iku-chan teaches us about palettes, paint washers, how to use paint, techniques for painting, and how to explore the expressions we like and feel—among other things—we’ll mix the colors for the sky and paint them onto the drawing paper where the snowflakes are falling.

Through the screen, I can catch glimpses of you all moving your brushes and gradually adding color… I wonder what kind of snowy sky with falling snowflakes you’re creating? I’ll be watching with excitement alongside Ms. Iku-chan.

A sky filled with the snowflakes everyone had created. Just as no two snowflakes are exactly alike, no two of the children’s skies were exactly the same. Some were delicate, others bold; some featured a beautiful interplay of colors, while others showed the traces of the many different drawing techniques you tried… Every sky was wonderful, and looking at them made me feel truly happy.

Snowflakes I drew at various locations. I put them all together into one image and sent it to everyone!
