Blab B Lab × RIKEN AIP Joint Research Project: “CHO KOUKA—AI Creates a School Song for Everyone!” We are launching the "CHO KOUKA—AI Creates a School Song for Everyone!" project, a joint research initiative between B Lab and RIKEN AIP.
In collaboration with RIKEN’s AIP Center—a leader in AI research in Japan—we will train an AI model using data on school songs from elementary, junior high, high schools, and universities across the country to generate models titled “This Is a School Song!” and “Everyone’s School Song!” Based on these models, we will provide schools nationwide with an opportunity to reevaluate and rearrange their school songs.
School songs have evolved as a unique aspect of Japanese school culture. It is said that they originated as part of the Meiji government’s educational reforms, introduced to unify values and ideologies, and subsequently spread as “songs of the homeland.”Now, a century later in the Reiwa era, what kind of school songs do we want to hear and sing? By engaging schools nationwide and utilizing AI technology, we will explore the future of school songs—ones that evolve to suit this era of diversifying values.
Schools participating in the research—including iU, Infinity International Academy, and Kaifu Elementary School in Kaiyo Town—will adopt AI-generated songs as their school anthems.In addition, through AI training, the project will provide a comprehensive map cataloging school songs nationwide and a system for arranging musical pieces, offering schools across the country the opportunity to reevaluate and rearrange their own school songs. Furthermore, the project will conduct research on the legal status of copyright for works generated by AI.
Come to think of it, it was recently announced that Tetsuya Komuro will be joining RIKEN’s AI and Music Team as a visiting researcher.

After graduating from the Faculty of Engineering at the University of Tokyo, he served as a visiting researcher at the MIT Media Lab before founding the NPO CANVAS and the Learning of Tomorrow Association, a General Incorporated Association, and assuming the role of representative. He serves as an outside director for Matsuya Co., Ltd., Fuji Media Holdings, Inc., and Digital Garage, Inc.
He has served on various government committees, including the Information and Communications Council of the Ministry of Internal Affairs and Communications, as well as the NHK Central Broadcasting Program Council. He also serves as a director of the Digital Signage Consortium, among other roles. He holds a Ph.D. in Policy and Media.
His publications include *Turning On Children’s Creativity!*, *What Are Smart Kids Doing on Their Smartphones?*, *The Forefront of Online Education in Japan: Considering Learning in the Post-COVID Era*,“What Is Programming Education? 45 Questions Parents Want to Know,” and “Declaration on Digital Education.” He has also provided supervision for numerous works, including “Ah, I See! Programming Education for Parents and Children Through Manga.”
