STEAM Workshop: “Measure and Create” in Takeshiba

Just like you measure length and weight, have you ever measured electricity?

Using a digital multimeter (tester) to explore the invisible world of electricity

Let's take a closer look to see what it's all about.

Making LEDs light up, building switches, running motors…

Let's create our own works of art using electronic circuits we've built ourselves and a variety of materials and tools!

"Measuring Electricity"

Let’s use a “tester”—a tool for checking the status of electrical and electronic circuits—to measure electricity in various sources, such as batteries, resistors, and the human body! (What is a tester? It’s a measuring instrument used to check voltage, current, and resistance.) *This is a topic covered in every session.

Sunday, April 3: Measure and Build: LED + ○○?

When I measure the battery with a multimeter, it reads “1.5.” Hmm? That’s the same number written on the battery. What exactly is a resistor? Maybe I’ll find out if I measure it. Let’s combine a full-color LED with a resistor to change the LED’s brightness and color! Warm colors, beautiful colors, your favorite colors… What kinds of colors will we create? And what kind of projects will come out of that?

Here are the electronic components we'll be using! >>> Full-color LEDs, resistors, trimmers, etc.

Sunday, May 1: Measure, Create—Switch + ○○?

Why does the light turn on when you flip the switch, and turn off when you flip it again? Let’s use a switch to control an LED and measure the voltage with a multimeter when the LED is on and when it’s off. Can we make a switch using everyday items? Is a sensor a type of switch? Combine various switches and LEDs to create your own projects. Does it light up when it’s dark? Does it light up when it’s bright? What kind of creations and stories will you come up with?

Here are the electronic components we'll be using! >>> LEDs, light sensors, variable resistors, etc.

Sunday, June 5: Measure and Build—Motor + ○○?

Can an LED light up just with a motor—even without a battery!? Let’s use a multimeter to measure the voltage and see if electricity is generated when the motor spins. If you spin the motor in the opposite direction… Hmm? What happens? Let’s make the motor spin using a homemade switch. What kind of project can we create using a motor that spins round and round?

Here are some of the electronic components we use! >>> Motors, switches, etc.
