STEAM Workshop: Measure and Create—LED Edition

Just like weight and length, have you ever measured electricity?

Let's use a tester (digital multimeter) to measure various electrical values.

First, let's try making the LED light up.

If the LED lights up, check it with a multimeter.

Battery voltage, LED voltage, resistance…

You'll even discover numbers that you can figure out just by measuring!

Next, let's use a tester to find things that conduct electricity!

What kinds of materials make a sound (or conduct electricity)? How many things that make a sound did you find??

We looked into not only materials but also tools, desks, chairs, and all sorts of other things.

Finally, students will combine circuits and materials to create their own original works.

Trying my hand at creating large-scale works using wood,

Trying my hand at building a circuit to light up lots of LEDs!

It all started with the same circuit. From there, a variety of works were created.

You can really feel the excitement when a slightly complicated circuit lights up, or…

I want to try my hand at all kinds of circuits—I want to make an LED light up!

It was a time when I could feel that kind of exciting energy.

If you come across something that makes you wonder, it might be fun to dig a little deeper!

    After graduating from the Faculty of Engineering at the University of Tokyo, he served as a visiting researcher at the MIT Media Lab before founding the NPO CANVAS and the Learning of Tomorrow Association, a General Incorporated Association, and assuming the role of representative. He serves as an outside director for Matsuya Co., Ltd., Fuji Media Holdings, Inc., and Digital Garage, Inc.
    He has served on various government committees, including the Information and Communications Council of the Ministry of Internal Affairs and Communications, as well as the NHK Central Broadcasting Program Council. He also serves as a director of the Digital Signage Consortium, among other roles. He holds a Ph.D. in Policy and Media.
    His publications include *Turning On Children’s Creativity!*, *What Are Smart Kids Doing on Their Smartphones?*, *The Forefront of Online Education in Japan: Considering Learning in the Post-COVID Era*,“What Is Programming Education? 45 Questions Parents Want to Know,” and “Declaration on Digital Education.” He has also provided supervision for numerous works, including “Ah, I See! Programming Education for Parents and Children Through Manga.”
