In December 2021, we held a photography program!

This program is provided by artist Akina Tokiyoshi.

What kind of animal is a hamster, anyway? How big is it? What does it feel like to touch? Does it have a tail? What color is it? Does it have any markings? Whether you’ve seen a hamster before or not, or whether you’ve touched one or not, start by picturing a hamster in your mind…This time, we’ll make a “nearly real” hamster using the same method Mr. Tokiyoshi uses to create his usual artwork.

Watch videos of both the real hamster that Mr. Tokiyoshi lives with and the “almost real” hamster. Hamsters look so soft—I wonder what they eat? They’re looking for food! Take a close look at the “almost real” hamster, too… I wonder what it’s made of?

We’ll start by shaping hamsters out of clay. Clay feels so cold—it feels so good! We’ll knead and roll it into whatever shape we imagine—almost just like real hamsters. Some turn out perfectly round, while others are lying on their sides, standing up, or even forming little families.

I’m going to create a collage by placing photos of real hamsters on top of the clay hamster. What color should I make this “almost-real” hamster? Will it have any patterns? I’ll just keep at it—sticking, sticking, tearing, sticking…

Finally, here’s a big gathering of everyone’s “almost real” hamsters! Hamsters of all different colors, shapes, patterns, and expressions were created.

I look forward to seeing you again!
