On Saturday, May 15, we held the #Nature "Mystery Creature Investigation Team" event [at the Takeshiba Research Institute—Preschool Class]!

We are pleased to welcome Captain Hiroshi Sasaki, a professional naturalist, as our special guest lecturer.
This time, we left the Takeshiba venue behind and met up at “Arisugawa-no-miya Memorial Park.” Led by Captain Sasaki, we set off on our exploration! We spotted turtles and carp in the pond, found lots of earthworm poop (!?) on the ground, heard the croaking of bullfrogs, discovered last year’s cicada shells, and even sniffed the leaves of Japanese pennywort… We made our way through the park, fully engaging all five senses. One of the kid researchers even found the wings of a beautiful yellow-green moth, the Great Blue Moth! When they reported it to Captain Sasaki, he was thrilled, saying it was a very rare creature.
After the exploration, we observed the plants and creatures we found under a microscope. When we looked at living things, flowers, and leaves through a microscope attached to a smartphone, we could clearly see the fine patterns invisible to the naked eye, as well as the rough and fluffy textures of their surfaces. By the end, even the parents who had joined us were completely engrossed in the observations.
There might be plenty of “mysterious creatures” in the park you always visit, on the streets you walk down every day, and even around your house. I hope this gives you a chance to take a closer look at the various living things around you. I look forward to seeing you again next month!
