February 2020 / Research Institute @ Takeshiba: February Log

We held an art workshop (program provided by the Fukasawa Art Institute)!
When we walked into the room, what did we find…?

The desk is turned upside down, and yarn is draped over the lily-of-the-valley ribbon.
There’s even a real banana on it.
“Oh—so that’s what today is about,”
one child says aloud.
That’s right—today we’re going to wind yarn in circles to make bananas 🍌
■Rolling

Round and round, round and round.
Time to get to work.
A child who carefully winds each strand so it doesn't slip out of place.
A child who wraps it roughly in a zigzag pattern and then fills in the gaps.
A child who carefully wraps yarn around the tip of a banana.
A child who threads masking tape through the yarn to use as a weight, making it easier to wrap.
All kinds of swirls.
■Banana → Fresh banana, ripe banana, evolved humanoid banana, melon, cherry, fried shrimp, the tip of the Skytree, ∞ (!?)

We transformed them into all sorts of shapes,
created beautiful banana peels by layering white and yellow washi tape in just the right way,
and tried winding yarn in circles starting from the corner of the room.
By getting creative with limited materials,
it was a time when each person’s unique way of “making” really came to life.

We're still accepting applications for the 2021 annual classes!
