- [Event Report] “BBT University’s Avatar Classes: A Discussion Between ‘Real-Life’ and ‘Avatar’ Students”
At the previous Learning of Tomorrow Online Lunch Symposium, we heard about avatar-based classes as part of BBT University’s initiatives during the COVID-19 pandemic—BBT University is a 100% online institution. They said that the avatar-based graduation ceremony they held during the pandemic was featured in 300 media outlets and served as a catalyst for similar initiatives to spread around the world. The photos really make a strong impression, after all.
Of course, we use avatars not only at graduation ceremonies but also in discussion-based classes.
This is a class in which “real students” and “avatar students” engage in group work. It is said that the physical presence of avatars fosters a sense of unity among group members and is highly effective for team building. Another benefit is that learning advisors, who are scattered across the country, can move between groups via their avatars to offer guidance.
Simulated on-site learning is very interesting. I hear they even tried remote fishing by placing an avatar on the beach. If avatars were installed in museums across the country, it would be possible to enjoy them remotely while moving freely through the space.
I previously participated in a KMD student exhibition as a "Double," and just by approaching people as a "Double" created opportunities for conversation.
Maybe I'll put one in the Takeshiba office, too.
Both Charith, the genius teacher from the former KMD, and Yamen are on Avatarin, aren't they? I'll ask them for advice.
