- [Report] October 31 (Sat) “The Secret Hideout Inside Our Home” ~ Science Log
From
a CANVAS Facebook post*******************************************
On October 31, we held the event “Ghost Pumpkins with the Power of Chemistry… Eruption!?”

I’d like to share just a little bit about what happened that day in the preschool and elementary school classes.
The theme for this session is "Chemical Reactions."
"Why do hand warmers get warm?" … and so on—there are many mysteries hidden in the everyday things right around us.
Since it was Halloween this year, we all made jack-o'-lanterns and used baking soda—which we normally use for cooking and cleaning—to explore "chemical reactions."
In science class, we place great importance on the time spent making predictions before conducting an experiment. Using our original “? Encyclopedia,” we think about what might happen before we begin the experiment.

Originally, we had planned to have the preschool class make predictions in a quiz format, but the children asked if they could make their own predictions. As a result, we received many predictions, which allowed us to think deeply about the topic and conduct experiments.

Then, to figure out why this phenomenon occurs, we used balloons, made predictions as a group, and conducted an experiment.

By thinking for themselves, even after conducting the experiment, they keep coming up with new questions—such as, “What would happen if we used salt instead of baking soda?”—which leads to further exploration.

We also received comments from participants in the elementary school class.

Thank you to everyone who participated!
I look forward to exploring all kinds of things with you all next time!
