School Digital Transformation

This is an article on school digital transformation (DX) that begins with Keiichi Murayama’s story about Alan Kay. It also introduces the initiatives and videos from the Learning of Tomorrow Association.

Professor Papert’s LOGO programming language sparked a revolution in the use of computers in education. The shift was from instructivism to constructivism. And to deliver new learning methods based on LOGO, let’s provide every child with a computer.Inspired by Papert, Alan Kay conceived the Dynabook concept. The illustration in Alan Kay’s 1972 paper depicting two children using Dynabooks has become famous.

And since 2001, the Media Lab has been promoting the One Laptop per Child (OLPC) project. That was the year I first set foot in the Media Lab. I still vividly remember the shock I felt when I heard about the concept over breakfast. “We’re going to revolutionize education with OLPC. Let’s turn every school into a computer.”

It looks like school digital transformation is finally getting underway in Japan, too.
