Launch of the “Learning of Tomorrow 5G” Working Group

The “Learning of Tomorrow 5G” Working Group has been launched. Members include the University of Tokyo, NTT, KDDI, SoftBank, Qualcomm, the Mainichi Shimbun, iU, and the Ministry of Internal Affairs and Communications. This working group aims not only to explore the intersection of education and 5G but also to pursue development and implementation. The Ministry of Internal Affairs and Communications has presented three concepts—"personalized education," "specialized education," and "health management"—as initiatives that leverage the characteristics of 5G. The ministry plans to explore classes and other educational settings where 5G is best suited through pilot projects utilizing local 5G networks. Professor Nakao of the University of Tokyo proposed "Learning of Tomorrow," which uses 5G to convey a sense of "presence."

For example, “Holoprtation,” which allows users in different locations to communicate as if they were physically in the same space; and research-based educational initiatives that promote regional revitalization and the resolution of local issues by combining environmental sensing with high-definition remote video monitoring, among other things.KDDI presented ways to deliver new experiences through the combination of 5G and xR, while NTT discussed methods for utilizing 5G in comprehensive education that includes learning through group activities beyond mere knowledge acquisition.

Moving forward, we plan to explore ways to improve home internet infrastructure, develop teaching materials and educational environments that leverage the characteristics of ultra-high-speed, ultra-low-latency, and ultra-high-capacity connectivity, conduct pilot tests connecting multiple schools, and, based on these efforts, identify and address key challenges.
