- Card for the Computer Clubhouse’s 10th Anniversary Party
I unearthed an invitation to the Computer Clubhouse’s 10th-anniversary party. The
“Computer Clubhouse” was an after-school learning program offered by the MIT Media Lab for low-income students, where they could use computers to design projects based on their interests—such as animation, robotics, video games, and music.IT companies such as Intel supported these activities.
Today, the program has expanded to more than 100 locations in 20 countries around the world.
At that time, the Media Lab also formed the “PIE Network,” an organization of children’s museums across the country, and was working to develop and promote computer-based workshops and other programs.
The activities of the Computer Clubhouse and the PIE Network had a significant influence on the development of CANVAS.
A few years ago, I spoke with Professor Mitchell Resnick, the founder of the Computer Clubhouse, for the first time in a long while about the Computer Clubhouse, and he told me,
“The Computer Clubhouse was a challenge to design the spaces and activities necessary for creative thinking.” That brings
back memories.
