Programming Education Finally Begins

It’s the start of a new fiscal year. While we’re all wondering when the new school term will begin, programming education is finally getting underway as well.

As of November 1, Reiwa 1, a key challenge regarding programming education in elementary schools was that 114 boards of education (6.5% of the total) had not yet established the basic framework for instruction considered to be the minimum requirement.

Subsequently, thanks to the efforts of the “Future Learning Consortium”—a framework for promoting programming education established by the Ministry of Education, Culture, Sports, Science and Technology (MEXT), the Ministry of Internal Affairs and Communications (MIC), and the Ministry of Economy, Trade and Industry (METI)—it was reportedly confirmed that all boards of education would commit to implementing the initiative before the start of classes this academic year.

Since programming education is a new challenge for schools, things won’t necessarily go smoothly from the start. That’s precisely why I hope society as a whole can support schools as they go through this process of trial and error.

I also received a detailed copy of the Sagamihara Programming Plan from Mr. Shigeichi Watanabe of the Sagamihara City Board of Education, with whom I served on the committee that drafted the Ministry of Education, Culture, Sports, Science and Technology’s “Guidelines for Programming Education in Elementary Schools.” Please feel free to refer to it as well.
