On March 9 (Sat) and 10 (Sun), Heisei 31, the “Workshop Collection in Fukuoka 2019,” a workshop expo for children, was held at the Center Zone of our university’s Ito Campus.
“Workshop Collection” is one of the world’s largest creative events aimed at promoting and developing workshops nationwide that stimulate the creativity and expressive abilities of children (elementary school students) through hands-on crafting and experiential activities.Since its debut in Tokyo in 2004, the event has gradually expanded nationwide; this marked its fourth iteration in Fukuoka, featuring a record-high 62 workshops (from 26 companies, 28 schools, and 8 organizations/individuals).In addition, as part of the events commemorating the completion of Kyushu University’s Ito Campus, workshops were held, including “Special Kyushu University Classes for Elementary School Students” led by 10 teachers and chemistry experiments conducted by current Kyushu University students.
On the day of the event, President Kubo addressed the children in the lecture hall where the special class was held, speaking gently about “the Ito Campus—Japan’s largest single campus—and the importance of studying and engaging in various hands-on experiences.”Over the two days, 27,000 participants visited Building No. 2 of the Ito Campus Center, the venue for the event. Activities included hands-on electronics projects, simulated bank teller experiences, and workshops for making original super balls and eco-bags; the Center Zone was filled with the constant cheers and smiles of the children.
As part of the university’s community contribution initiatives and in pursuit of “realizing a curriculum open to society,” this program is scheduled to continue into the next fiscal year and beyond.
