Why!? Programming

Today’s NHK Central Program Council meeting discussed “Why!? Programming.”

Four reasons why I think “Why!? Programming” is great.
1. Above all, it’s fun.
With almost no explanatory elements, the program is structured to make viewers think, “This looks fun!” right from the start. It effectively conveys the message that programming is a tool, and what truly matters is for children to come up with their own ideas and bring them to life!

2. Mechanisms that encourage hands-on experience and support it
The website provides materials for creating projects so that children who watch the show can try them out right away.
Furthermore, the show skillfully depicts the process by which the characters solve the presented challenges through trial and error.
It’s clear that the program places a strong emphasis on children actually experiencing things for themselves.

3. Mechanisms to Maintain Motivation
In addition to providing a space where children can submit their creations, the program also features children’s work on the show and holds awards ceremonies. Numerous mechanisms are in place to stimulate children’s motivation.
It’s also great that the website serves as a gathering place for children (*^^*)

4. Can Be Used as School Teaching Materials!
One-third of the entire program is designed with use in elementary school subjects in mind, and video clips and teaching materials are provided.
The use of NHK’s content is even recommended in the programming education guidelines issued by the Ministry of Education, Culture, Sports, Science and Technology.
For teachers who may be feeling anxious, wondering, “Even though it’s called programming, where should I even start?” and for parents who are interested but can’t find programming classes in their area, why not give “Why!? Programming” a try?

I hope NHK will continue to create programs that guide learning at home and in schools into the next generation!
