Platinum Grand Prize

The Platinum Grand Prize recognizes initiatives across Japan that embody the vision of a “Platinum Society”—initiatives promoted by Professor Hiroshi Komiyama that create new industries through innovation and solve regional challenges with creative solutions. It’s been in the news, hasn’t it? Congratulations to all the winners!

I served on the judging panel again this year. With such an illustrious group of judges led by Professor Hiroyuki Yoshikawa, former President of the University of Tokyo, I’m always humbled to be included as one of the judges…
I think it was particularly good this year that examples of regional revitalization through the arts—which had not been selected for the Platinum Grand Prize in the past—were chosen for the Excellence Award.
During breaks in the judging, Professor Hiroyuki Yoshikawa and Professor Yoshio Tsukio shared various behind-the-scenes stories about the architecture of Kenzo Tange and Tadao Ando. As I listened, I found myself thinking how wonderful it would be if these stories were preserved in a book.
