*******************************************
On Friday, August 11 (a holiday), we held our “First Steps in Programming with Cubetto” event!
Participants programmed the adorable wooden robot “Cubetto” and set off on an adventure to find treasure.
First, we'll use our own bodies to experience what "programming" is all about. We'll pair up with a friend to give movement instructions, or pretend to be robots and follow those instructions to move.
Next, it’s time to program Cubetto. We’ll fit the blocks together so that Cubetto can follow the path made of origami paper correctly. If Cubetto strays off the path or starts moving in the opposite direction, it’s time to try again! Through trial and error, we’ll learn how to give the right instructions.
Once everyone’s Cubetto has successfully navigated the path, the adventure finally begins! To collect the treasures hidden on the map, you’ll program your Cubetto to move. The kids kept giving Cubits instructions over and over again to collect as much treasure as possible. Seeing them happily celebrating with their dad—“You’ve learned ‘right’ and ‘left’!”—made us happy, too.
One of the great things about Cubetto is that it lets kids learn the basics of programming in a fun and playful way through various activities—such as creating simple stories using maps, as we did today, or giving Cubetto movement commands within a world they’ve built with craft materials. Thank you to all the kids who
participated!
