- Symposium on “Developing Evaluation Criteria for Qualities and Abilities Cultivated Through Programming”
Benesse and CANVAS have launched an initiative to “develop assessment criteria for the qualities and competencies fostered through programming.”
Yesterday, a symposium was held as part of the STEAM KIDS program,
where a draft version of the standards—developed with reference to standards from the United Kingdom and the United States—was presented. This was followed by a discussion with Professor Kanji
Akahori, Section Chief Umemura from the Ministry of Education, Culture, Sports, Science and Technology (MEXT), Section Chief Imamura from the Ministry of Internal Affairs and Communications (MIC), and Mr. Oda from Benesse, the leader of the
standards development team. The document can be downloaded from the page

Although we recognize that establishing standards is one of the challenges in promoting programming education, we had not addressed it until now.
This is strictly a trial version, and we plan to refine it based on the results of this year’s pilot program.
We decided to publish these guidelines with the hope that they will be useful for the introduction of programming into
school education—even as we plan to evolve them
flexibly by incorporating your feedback and linking best practices from across the country to these standards.
STEAM KIDS is in session again today. Up next is “Dr. Hige and the Nonsense★Machine” presented by Meiwa Denki! Can’t wait!
