HachiLab Workshop: February 19 Report & Call for Participants for March 5

On February 19, we held a workshop at the Shibuya City Children’s Science Center Hachilab with Dr. Harada, his colleagues, Biscuit, and a new 3D creation app called Donut. This special workshop was designed to provide a deeper exploration of the special exhibition “Dr. Harada’s Room of Wonders: Research on Computers and Ways to Find Fun in This World.”

First through third graders took on the Biscuit workshop! In
Biscuit, instead of giving verbal commands, participants use special glasses to animate illustrations. After making sea creatures swim and practicing the wobbly movements of ghosts, each group created their own “World of Sweets,” “World of Space,” and “World of Soil.”At the presentation, the large screen at Hachi Lab was filled with everyone’s creations. When the Doctor asked, “Who made this one?” the children introduced the creatures they had drawn, exclaiming, “This is King Mole!”

In the afternoon, we worked with students from fourth grade through middle school to create 3D shapes using the 3D app “Donut.” “Donut” is an app that can only be experienced through HachiLab’s exhibits and workshops. Just as a design ruler allows you to draw geometric patterns with curving lines, “Donut” lets you create three-dimensional geometric patterns. To create
regular patterns, you need to make full use of common factors, multiplication, and division. While asking the researchers questions, everyone created more than 10 different shapes. The researchers are currently printing the created data using a 3D printer. Once they’re finished, we’ll deliver them to all the participants!

Our next workshop will be held on Sunday, March 5.
In the morning, we’ll hold two biscuit-making workshops, and in the afternoon, you can try out a workshop on “SynMotion,” an app for creating kaleidoscope patterns. There are still a few spots available, so we look forward to your applications.
