Starting this school year, we have begun implementing programming education for children with
disabilities in collaboration with several special education schools.
Today, we held a Biscuit class at the Tokyo Metropolitan Shakujii Special Education School.
We were honored to have Dr. Harada, the developer, and the rest of the Biscuit team join us as guest instructors!
After we all went over the basics of
Biscuit—including how to create different movements depending on the number and arrangement of “glasses”—we moved on to creating art pieces based on the themes of “sea creatures” and “forest creatures”! We ended up with so many pieces brimming with
each person’s unique creativity—and the more you listened to the stories behind them, the more they came to life.
By expanding the concept of “glasses,” some children explored the speed of movement, others discovered the joy of layering
many colors, and still others challenged themselves to move them in a straight line, like a march. Working closely with teachers who understand
each child’s individuality and needs, we tailored our facilitation to meet each child’s specific requirements. We plan to hold another class
tomorrow! Stay tuned for future reports.
*This initiative is being carried out as part of the “YouthSpark: Programming for All” project, a collaboration between Microsoft and CANVAS.
