[HachiLab Special Workshop Report] CANVAS serves as the general producer for the annual exhibition series at the
Shibuya City Children’s Science Center—HachiLab—which fosters
children’s scientific thinking and enthusiasm for hands-on creation.

We are currently hosting the exhibition “Naohisa Ito’s Exhibition of Wonders Spanning Art and Science: Experience the Wonders You See With Your Own Eyes!” in
collaboration with CANVAS Fellow Naohisa Ito!

As a special workshop on June 12,
we held a “Mini-Mini Strobe Light” session led by Naoyuki Ito.
Participants built their own Mini-Mini Strobe Lights—which are also featured
in the exhibition as works that utilize the principles of animation—by soldering electronic components such as LEDs and transistors onto the circuit boards.

Even the children who were soldering for the first time carefully soldered each piece one by one while listening to Mr.
Ito’s tips.
Everyone finished in about an hour and a half!

By rotating the eight panels—each with a slightly different pose—and shining the homemade strobe light on them, the still images come to life as an
animation. I also tried my hand at creating my own original animation by drawing the eight pictures
myself.
I worked on creating pieces that took advantage of the magic of seeing the images with my own eyes after testing them in a dark room.

Finally, we turned the room completely dark for everyone’s comic strip presentation. A variety of works emerged, featuring changing
text, shifting facial expressions, and creative use of color. Moving images emerged from the
darkness, and we admired our friends’ work in a magical atmosphere.

Our next workshop, “Pecotto Twin Tone,”
which explores the wonders of light and color,
will be held this weekend on Sunday, July 3. There are still a few spots available, so please give us a call for more information!
