Kickoff Meeting: “Programming Education for All”

We are about to launch a new programming education project in collaboration with Microsoft,
so today we held the kickoff meeting for “Programming Education for All.”Mr. Anthony, Vice President at Microsoft and Global Education Team Leader, joined us from
Seattle, along with
Ichinomiya City Mayor Masayasu Nakano; Mr. Atsutaka Tazoe, President of the National Association of Principals of Special Education Schools for Students with Physical Disabilities; Mr. Katsuji Niitsu from the Ministry of Education, Culture, Sports, Science and Technology; Mr. Hiroyuki Okazaki from the Ministry of Internal Affairs and Communications;Katsura Ito, Executive Officer at Microsoft Japan, who all gave presentations regarding this project.

With the goal of “Bringing Programming to All Children!” in mind, this project will focus
this fiscal year on reaching children living in rural areas—who currently have few opportunities to experience programming—as well as children with disabilities and girls in elementary, middle, and high school.
I provided an overview of the specific details of the project.
For children living in rural areas, we will partner with Ichinomiya City in Aichi Prefecture, Koga City in Ibaraki Prefecture, and Sanjo City in Niigata Prefecture to introduce programming into elementary and middle school classes as well as Saturday study programs.
For female elementary, junior high, and high school students, we will collaborate with Tsuda College and the Center for Support of Female Researchers to develop curricula and train instructors through workshops for
college students.For children with
disabilities, we will implement the program in high school classes at Komyo Special Needs School and in elementary and middle school classes at Shakujii Special Needs School.
We will also conduct classes connecting the two schools via Skype. We intend to use
these initiatives as model cases and will work with the goal of expanding them nationwide, so we appreciate your continued support.

After the presentation, I had a discussion with Dr. Soichiro Hirai from Koga City, Ibaraki Prefecture; Iei Miyajima from Coder Dojo;
and Nao Hoshino and Yumiko Kaneda, who are promoting programming education in Nasu.
Thank you all so much for participating! ♪
