- [Report] HachiLab Workshop
From a CANVAS Facebook post
*******************************************
As part of the “Worlds Expanded Through Digital Ehon” exhibition currently being held at the Children’s Science Center HachiLab (Shibuya Ward, Tokyo), we held the second session of our workshop yesterday, Sunday, March 13! In this workshop, participants used the programming behind “Digital Ehon”—the mechanisms that make them move—to create their own interactive picture books.
This time, participants were elementary school students in grades 1 through 3.
They experienced features not found in ordinary picture books—such as “characters moving on their own,” “sounds playing,” and “responding to taps”—in the Digital Ehon featured in the exhibition, and then took on the challenge of creating those mechanisms themselves!
For two and a half hours—a long session—they concentrated on creating their own stories, taking breaks along the way.
Once their creations were finished, they got to experience the works their friends had made.
They seemed to have a lot of fun interacting with their friends’ creations, noticing the unique twists and ideas that differed from their own.
After the closing remarks, everyone looked proud as we applauded their hard work.
We’ve also shared the projects via CANVAS Scratch accounts so participants can continue working on them at home.
The next session will be held on Sunday, March 27, for students in 4th through 6th grade.
Participation is open to everyone, not just Shibuya Ward residents, so we look forward to your applications.
