[Presentation] Benesse: “Reflecting on the Meaning of Learning and Student Autonomy Through the Basic Survey on Learning: The Past 25 Years and the Next 25 Years”

I spoke at an event titled “Reflecting on the Meaning of Learning and Student Agency Through the Basic Survey on Learning: The Past 25 Years and the Next 25 Years.”
This was the 2015 report presentation by Benesse on the attitudes and actual learning practices of elementary, middle, and high school students, based on surveys conducted over the past 25 years.
The amount of time spent learning outside of school, which had been declining steadily since the survey began in 1990, began to rise again in 2001 and fully recovered by 2015.
Although there has been a V-shaped recovery in the quantity of learning, should we simply be satisfied with that?
What should we do moving forward to shift the focus toward quality? Let’s all think about this together!
That was the purpose of the symposium, which took the form of a workshop attended by approximately 300 participants.
The event featured a variety of presentations, brainstorming sessions among participants, presentations, and reflections.
The photo shows Professor Yuichiro Anzai delivering his concluding remarks—he reportedly created his presentation materials in real time while listening to the symposium. Amazing!
