"Red in Bed (The Baby Is in Bed)" by Josh On
http://redinbedbooks.com/
◆What kind of work is it? Can you explain your work?◆
“Red In Bed (Baby’s in Bed)” is a story in which the color friends take turns coloring the world while “Baby” is in bed with a cold. Tapping the
color friends makes a sound, so you can enjoy the app almost like a musical instrument.
The exquisite interactions that captivate children are a must-see!
The colors of the rainbow wake up and get out of bed to color the world, except for Red, who feels sick. The other colors help Red out and color the objects that are normally red themselves. Children can help the colors color the world and help Red restore everything to normal in the end!
◆Was there a specific reason you decided to create this book?
Why did you decide to make the book?◆As I read many picture books to my daughter, who was two at
the time, I began to think about creating a picture book with “colors” as the main characters.
My daughter was two, and I was reading her lots of picture books. I had the idea that colors could be characters, and thought that would be the basis for a children’s book. Once I had the basic idea for the story, I realized it would work well as an app.
◆Making the App◆
At first, I wanted to create a picture book that looked like a painting, so I spent a long time drawing watercolor illustrations. However, since the results were a little different from what I had envisioned, I decided to take photos of concrete with my cell phone camera. I used photos of
concrete surfaces to create most of the images that appear in the app.If you look closely at the characters and backgrounds in the app, you’ll see patterns that resemble concrete!
I thought it should have a painterly feel, so I spent some time creating watercolor textures, but it wasn’t turning out quite right. So I switched to a technique of photographing textures with my phone—mainly concrete—and using those to give texture to the various objects.
