[A Museum Just for Kids in Daikanyama]

On December 19, we held the “Kids-Only Museum Daikanyama” event!
The Kids-Only Museum is a time for children to freely create using a variety of materials—from everyday items found at the venue to professional-grade tools.

Here’s what came out of this museum session.
At first, there was a child who simply enjoyed the acts of “cutting” and “pasting” themselves; whenever he discovered a new activity, he’d try it out and then come back to show us his work with a delighted expression.
Later, upon seeing a round target left behind by a previous participant, he exclaimed, “I’m going to make a clock!” He gathered materials by imitating what he’d seen and, through trial and error, created
his very own “clock.”

Among the elementary school students, some thought about how to display their finished creations this time. They created a series of underwater creatures, such as jellyfish and octopuses, and attached a handle to the top of each one’s head so they could move them around themselves, giving them a
soft, floating appearance. When displaying them, they wanted them to look like they were floating, so they hung them up.

It was also impressive to see how the children who built telescopes made adjustments so that when they looked through them, they could see a blue world, and how those who built moving objects observed
how they moved and made
adjustments—thinking, “If it’s too light, it’ll tip over, so let’s make it heavier”—as if they were conducting research.

At the Children’s Museum, we value not only the final results but also the process—
how things were created. There are times when it seems that, as time passes within the museum, the children undergo all sorts of changes—both big and
small.
Please feel free to ask your children, “What did you do today?”
They might just share some unexpected stories with you.

The next "Kids-Only Museum" events will be held in
Nishi-Azabu on Sunday, January 10, and in Daikanyama on Saturday, January 16. The event in
Nishi-Azabu will be the last one held there in January.

We’ve set up a space where you can come whenever you feel like creating.
We look forward to seeing you there.
