On Sunday, December 13, at Fab Lean Asia 2015, we welcomed Ricarose Roque—a member of the Scratch team at the MIT Media Lab—as our instructor. Together with Professor Abe, OtOMO, and CANVAS, we held a Scratch × Makey Makey workshop—the same one we conduct locally—specifically tailored for adults!
Makey Makey is a touch-sensor board that turns any everyday object into an interface simply by connecting it to a computer via USB.
In this workshop, participants will work in pairs to use Makey Makey and Scratch to bring their stories to life, drawing inspiration from three randomly assigned keywords.
Based on the keywords “airplane,” “apple,” and “laugh,” one team created an airplane and a runway, resulting in a piece where an apple inside a scratch-off card moves and laughs just as the airplane lands. Another team, inspired by the keywords “water,” “car,” and “snow,” devised a story in which a car driving on a wet road turns the water into snow. A variety of creative works emerged, including one that utilized real water as part of its mechanism.
Although many participants were new to Scratch and Makey Makey, I had expected it would be challenging to complete the entire process—from creation to presentation—within just two hours. However, Ricarose’s approach was refreshing and very informative: she kept explanations to a minimum while making full use of materials like Scratch cards, and ensured ample time was set aside for both the creative process and the presentations.
I hope to put this invaluable experience to good use in the future!
