≪Study Session Overview≫
Mr. Sakagami of EduTechnology Co., Ltd. delivered a presentation titled “Purpose and Background of 1-to-1 Implementation: A Comparison Between Japan and the World.”
EduTechnology provides consulting services for the implementation of ICT equipment in schools, as well as the planning, organization, and operation of training sessions.
In this session, he focused on lessons to be learned from global trends and systems in ICT education, and discussed how to successfully implement a “one tablet per student” (hereinafter: 1-to-1) program in Japanese schools.
First, he described domestic trends in tablet adoption, noting that the widespread adoption of technology in recent years marked a turning point in the current push toward implementing tablet programs. He then addressed the global decline in tablet sales,
He began by discussing trends in the domestic tablet market, noting that the widespread adoption of technology in recent years had served as a turning point, prompting the current push to introduce tablets. He then addressed the global decline in tablet sales, examining the latest alternative technologies and their practicality in education,
, while noting that we should focus on how to develop services as new industries emerge. Based on these points, he explained two key perspectives—
“Organization and Personnel” and “Essential Elements”—that are crucial for the successful implementation of 1-to-1.
First, regarding “Organization and Personnel,” he used examples from overseas to illustrate the types of organizations and personnel required from three
perspectives: 1. “Vision and Leadership,” 2. “Curriculum Coordinators,” and 3. “ICT Managers and
Technology Coordinators.” He explained that none of these elements can be omitted,
, and it was pointed out that, in Japan in particular, “Vision and Leadership” is the most lacking element.
It was explained that success in implementing a 1-to-1 program can be achieved by incorporating these three perspectives, and the speaker also explained how to integrate them into the current
school structure. Next, under “Essential Elements,”
(1) “Core Internet Connectivity,” (2) “Appropriate Teacher Training,” and (3) “A Medium- to Long-Term Implementation Plan” were presented as three elements essential for the successful implementation of 1-to-1, and among these, “Appropriate Teacher Training” was identified as the element currently lacking in Japan.
In this way, after presenting his views on the keys to successful 1-to-1 implementation based on examples from overseas, he noted that a key point would be the extent to which this policy can generate profit from a business perspective in the future, as well as how to adapt the current business model and monetize services when a turning point eventually arrives.
