<Raspberry Pi @ Nakahara Hachinosuke Club>
On Saturday, November 14, we held a Raspberry Pi workshop at the Nakahara Hachinosuke Club.
The Nakahara Hachinosuke Club holds PC classes called “Everyone’s PC” about 10 times a year, featuring workshops that use Squeak and Scratch.
Mr. Abe, who provides Supervision for PEG, has also been involved as an instructor for a long time.
For the students in the Standard Class, this was their first time working with both the Raspberry Pi and Scratch! Since they’d
already had some experience with Squeak, they got right to work as they listened to Mr. Abe’s instructions.
They were creating a game where the main character greets a cat when they meet. “What should the greeting be?” “What about the background?” “Let’s add some sound, too!” We could hear them brainstorming all sorts of creative ideas.
Since everyone in the Step-Up Class has their own Raspberry Pi—a gift from PEG last year—they can continue working on their projects at home.
This time, they took their first step beyond the world of computers and tried making an LED light up!
The first one lit up easily! But for the second one, which GPIO pin should they use?? They succeeded by comparing their pin layouts with their neighbors’.
Finally, they made a switch out of cardboard and linked it to an animation in Scratch. Since we ran out of
time, we plan to continue this project in the next session.
Next week, we’ll also be holding a Raspberry Pi class at Nakahara Elementary School. I’m looking forward to seeing what everyone creates.
