[Kids Creative Research Institute at Meiji University]
On October 11, we held the Meiji Research Institute event!
This program focused on the theme of “words”; in
the preschool class, the children interacted with and created their names, while in the elementary school class, the students created their own personal dictionaries.
What kinds of things have names?
Why do they have names?
When we tried finding the names of things in the room… one child even listed:
“the floor, the desk, the light, the wall, the ceiling, a pencil, and a utility pole!” If we put name tags on everything that has a name, the room would probably be covered in them!
We also have the precious names given to us by the people who named us. We took time to call each other by
those names and even embellished them to create our very own unique names.
Each name was imbued with the child’s favorite things and reflected their unique personality.
In the elementary school class, we started by creating a “sea of words” and having the students collect words they wanted to include in their own dictionaries. Words they
knew, words they didn’t know, words that piqued their curiosity… Even as they struggled to decide, they gradually selected a wide variety of words. When we laid out each
selected word to create the first page of the dictionary, every single page turned out so wonderful that we wanted to set aside time for each student to look at them carefully.
Once they had chosen their words, the students also took on the challenge of explaining those words in their own words.
Our next program will focus on "food"!
We look forward to seeing all our young researchers again next month!
