[A Museum Just for Kids in Daikanyama]
On September 19, we held a museum event just for kids in Daikanyama!
The “Children-Only Museum” venue is stocked with plenty of materials and tools.
These range from everyday items to things the children have never seen before, and even include some more professional-grade tools.
The children use these materials and tools to create freely.
Adults never tell them, “Let’s make this!”
Our role is to offer a little help, provide guidance when they’re stuck, and create alongside them.
The children steadily bring the worlds in their imaginations to life right before their eyes.
Here are some of the creations made during this museum visit.
One child connected tubes of different sizes and placed plastic bottle caps—which served as “bullets”—inside them.
When I asked to see it, for some reason the caps only came out of one of the tubes.
The other children standing nearby looked puzzled and asked, “Why!?” The child had created a mechanism that was a bit like a magic trick.
Among the elementary school students, there was a child who built a structure shaped like a crane—one that was very difficult to balance. As they
built it, they thought through the structure and eventually succeeded after a few failures.
At the museum, while we certainly value the finished products, we also place great importance on the process leading up to them and on giving each child the time to create at their own pace.
We hold sessions twice a month in Nishi-Azabu and Daikanyama, providing a place where children can come whenever they feel like creating.
