[Kids Creative Lab in Meiji]
On Sunday, July 12, the Kids Creative Lab at Meiji held the workshops “Let’s Try Being a Monster” (Preschool Class) and “Flying!? Stop-Motion” (Elementary School Class).
“Let’s Try Being Monsters!” Are there really
monsters in this world? Maybe monsters live in a world just like ours!
Let’s let our imaginations run wild and all try being monsters together! That’s the theme for today.
First, we’ll read the picture book *Five Little Monsters Have Arrived!* to discover monsters who love to eat and monsters bigger than houses, and then we’ll each create our own monster.
A monster with a fever, cooling its forehead. A monster with a scary face but who loves apples. A monster that only defeats the bad guys. Once we decided
what kind of monster each of us would be, we got into character and struck poses in front of the camera! With unique
faces, names, personalities, and poses, we created lots of monsters—each one truly one-of-a-kind in the world.
"Flying!? Stop-Motion"
There are lots of things that fly, but how can people fly? I explored this question by moving my body, then linked together "moments" captured in photos to create an animation of flying.
With photos, you can fly!If you jump, take a photo at the highest point, and string together several photos, it looks just like you’re flying through the air.
But it’s not that easy… As I repeated the process over and over, I realized that jumping high is the key to flying well.
From there, I began experimenting with different ways to jump—moving forward little by little, spinning around in circles, and more.
Next, we went outside and challenged ourselves to fly using all sorts of props and objects—jumping from rock to rock, stuffing lots of balloons into a big bag, and even straddling a broom to fly!
Finally, we held a screening of everyone’s stop-motion animations and discovered all sorts of ways to fly through the air, as well as the sheer joy of flying.
