Yesterday, we also held a Raspberry Pi workshop at the Narumi Education and Culture Center.
This was the final session of a three-part workshop series that began in May. Participants used the Raspberry Pi’s GPIO to interact with the outside world.
We’ll have them figure out how to boot up the Raspberry Pi on their own. After they finished
early, they launched Scratch, played the game they made last time, and reviewed what they learned previously.
Once everyone had their projects up and running, we jumped right into the “LED Blink” challenge!
We attached jumper wires to the positive and negative terminals and connected them to GPIO pins 6 and 11, respectively.
When the LED lit up successfully, everyone was thrilled! “How can we make it brighter?” “How do we make it blink?” They kept adding blocks to create their own custom blinking patterns. When they used
cardboard to make characters, it seemed to spark even more creative ideas for how to make them light up.
We made even more switches using cardboard. Although they’re
very simple, depending on how you combine them, you can control games in Scratch or operate LEDs, so the students were able to spend their free time in a very fulfilling way.
Even after the session ended, there were questions about the Raspberry Pi and summer vacation science projects. I
really hope you’ll keep working on these at home.
We are currently planning to offer a program with an even more diverse lineup this year.
We also hope to bring programming workshops to various locations during summer vacation.
