Today, we’re holding a workshop using Raspberry Pi and LEDs at the Fukushi no Sato Children’s Center in Niiza City, Saitama Prefecture! Participants will
split into teams to create artwork using “light.”
The workshop was planned and organized through a collaboration between the staff at the Children’s Center and employees of Sanken Electric Co., Ltd., which is headquartered in Niiza City. The worksheets, instruction sheets, and even the Raspberry Pi cases were all handmade by the children’s center staff!
The LEDs were provided by Sanken Electric.
Information panels explaining the LEDs used in everyday places and products were also set up at the venue, allowing participants to learn how the LEDs they’ll be using in the workshop are actually utilized in society. This serves as a great example of collaboration between
local organizations and businesses. Stay tuned to see what kind of creations will emerge!

The Raspberry Pi × LED workshop in Niiza City is now in its second half!
After learning how to control the blinking of LEDs—courtesy of Sanken Electric—it was time for each group to brainstorm what kind of project to create!
Thanks to their familiarity with Scratch and the Raspberry Pi—as the Fukuishi-no-Sato Children’s Center has Raspberry Pis set up permanently—all the children were able to control the blinking LEDs with ease. They’re creating projects inspired by a wide variety of motifs, including
fireworks, fruits, animals, and constellations!

Watermelons, jellyfish, fireflies, fireworks, and constellations. Using LED lights, the participants created original works featuring a variety of motifs!
If future workshops allow for more extended free-creation time, it seems possible to build on this workshop and develop even more advanced sessions.
This workshop provided plenty of ideas for the future!
Please continue to follow our programming education initiatives in Niiza City.
