≪Study Session Overview≫
Under the title “Initiatives Regarding the Adaptive Learning System (RICS) at Ritsumeikan Moriyama Junior High School,”
we heard presentations from Mr. Kimura, Head of the RICS Promotion Office at Ritsumeikan Moriyama Junior and Senior High School; Mr. Inukai, a teacher at the school; and
Mr. Ujiie of Dentsu International Information Services Co., Ltd.
First, Mr. Ujiie spoke about the initiatives of the Open Innovation Lab.
The lab integrates cutting-edge technologies and insights from around the world to create services, and collaborates with companies and educational institutions to work on technical research and service development aimed at the practical application of various cutting-edge technologies.
As part of their educational projects, they have implemented a program based on the RICS (Adaptive Learning) methodology. This approach allows children to use their school education as a foundation to acquire the academic skills and knowledge necessary to thrive in 21st-century society. By tailoring learning methods and content to each student’s individual tendencies, the program helps students expand their potential without being constrained by standardized test scores or grades.
to realize learning tailored to children’s diversity and individuality. Based on the premise that human connections have a positive impact on daily learning, the program has successfully fostered and sustained motivation for learning. Furthermore, last spring, a joint project with Ritsumeikan Moriyama Junior and Senior High School was launched.
Next, Mr. Kimura and Mr. Inukai from Ritsumeikan Moriyama Junior High School explained their use of ICT and the RICS initiative.
Until the 2014 school year, iPads were used as tools for collaborative learning, but starting in 2014, each student was provided with their own device.
From the students’ perspective, they could be considered “cool” school supplies.
We kept the rules for using them basic. This was because we wanted to give students more freedom so they could
explore various ways to use them on their own. However, challenges arose one after another.
For example, excessive gaming, inability to manage passcodes, inability to manage devices, and using iMessage
as if it were LINE.We devised solutions for each of these issues one by one, and these efforts have evolved into significant practical applications and results. As a result, time spent on homework has increased, and academic performance has improved.
When we conducted a survey asking students about the usability of RICS, the types of problems provided, and whether it was helpful for their learning, we received positive feedback.
