≪Study Session Overview≫
Under the title “New 21st-Century Teaching and Assessment Initiatives Utilizing ICT,”
.
Amid global changes in teaching methods in recent years, “active learning” has begun to be adopted, and, using case studies, he explained how the use of ICT has evolved from a merely supplementary role to a leading role in classes that realize new forms of learning and assessment.
, drawing on specific examples.
To foster 21st-century skills (qualities and competencies), it is essential not only to develop subject-specific knowledge but also to cultivate communication skills and problem-solving abilities; it is crucial to develop these as an integrated whole.
Last year, as part of a joint research project between Shizuoka University, Kakegawa City, and NEC,titled “Fostering 21st-Century Skills and Improving Academic Achievement Through New Forms of Learning Utilizing ICT,” a joint research project involving Shizuoka University, Kakegawa City, and NEC, we implemented lessons at two elementary and middle schools that combined the development of these skills with academic achievement.
We presented an example from a science class at Osuga Middle School. By having students share data with other groups during group activities
, allowing students to organize their own thoughts. By shifting from teacher-centered to student-centered instruction,
we were able to bring out more of their potential and foster a deeper understanding of the material.
Unlike paper tests that focus solely on scores, this approach allows teachers to track the thought processes and progress of students,
enabling them to measure true academic ability.
Furthermore, a study by the Ministry of Education, Culture, Sports, Science and Technology compared the level of understanding between classes that used tablets (active learning) and those that did not (passive learning). It found that students who used tablets demonstrated a deeper conceptual understanding, fewer incorrect answers and unresolved issues, and a higher rate of knowledge retention.
We believe that as cloud environments and analytics apps become more sophisticated, the quality of formative assessment will improve even further, and the burden on teachers will be reduced.
We intend to continue sharing our research findings on an ongoing basis.
