Fune-kun’s Journey Exhibition

Held from Monday, June 10, 2013, to Friday, October 11, 2013. This is a spatial picture book exhibition where visitors can experience the world of Koji
Ishikawa’s picture book *Fune-kun’s Journey*.Visitors can enjoy *Fune-kun’s Journey* through both digital and analog experiences, including content where you can create your own “Fune-kun” using Bigpad, as well as the participatory activity “Let’s Create an Island Encyclopedia Together,” where you can imagine the islands “Fune-kun” will visit next and create an illustrated encyclopedia.

Picture Book "Fune-kun's Journey"
by Koji Ishikawa

*Fune-kun's Journey* is a leisurely picture book in which Fune-kun delivers a letter from a young boy. For the exhibition space, we wanted visitors to be instantly transported into the world of *Fune-kun's Journey*, so we designed the entire space to evoke the atmosphere of the sky and the sea. Visitors can experience the world of this paper picture book through all five senses.

Three-dimensional models of the islands and characters from *Fune-kun's Journey*. We've placed cushions shaped like islands and boats so that children can sit on them and feel as if they're sailing on the real ocean. The cushions aren't square either—we made them round, just like real islands.

This is the “Fune-kun’s Journey” Theater. We deliberately chose not to include any interactive elements, creating a movie that moves very, very slowly. In the picture book, Fune-kun moves forward each time you turn a page, encountering islands and other ships along the way. However, in this Fune-kun Theater, all the scenes are connected, allowing you to realistically experience Fune-kun’s journey firsthand.

On this large display (BigPad), you can work with a tablet to create your very own original boat and set it adrift on the vast ocean.

As I built and launched more and more boats, the harbor became such a lively scene.

A scene showing the original author, Mr. Ishikawa, teaching the children how to make it.

<Daily Workshop>

01. Let’s Visit Funekun’s World! Let’s Make Your Own Funekun! A workshop where you can create your very own “Funekun” by combining different
colors and shapes.

02. Where Are We Going with Fune-kun!? Fune-kun's Splash-Splash Animation: A workshop where you arrange parts like the
ocean, islands, and clouds, take photos of them, and create your own original animation.

03. What Kind of Island Will Fune-kun Visit? Let’s Create an “Island Encyclopedia”
Together! What kind of island will Fune-kun visit? Let’s let our imaginations run wild and draw our own islands in this workshop.

04. Whose feelings does Fune-kun carry? Let’s send a Fune-kun postcard! You can
take a photo using the Fune-kun frame and write a message on a Fune-kun postcard.

After the workshop, the harbor was filled with lots of colorful "Fune-kun" boats that everyone had made.

■Talk Event

At the talk event titled “Thinking About the Future of Digital Ehon,” which focused on the theme of “Expression and Media,” we welcomed Koji Ishikawa, the author of *Fune-kun’s Journey*—the original work featured in this exhibition—along with Yasuaki Yoshioka from the Business Development Unit of Dai Nippon Printing’s honto Business Division, and from Digital Ehon, myself and Art Director Kiri held a talk session. We discussed the excitement generated by expressions that traverse various media through this exhibition, as well as the potential of “digital picture books” as a new form of expression.

I was struck by how carefree the children seemed in the world of *Fune-kun's Journey*.
