[Kids Creative Lab in Shibuya: Workshop for Children and Adults]

On Sunday, March 8, we held the Kids Creative Lab—open to adults as well—at the Mixi, Inc. headquarters in Shibuya!

The preschool class was titled “Stick-and-Chat Space.” The children created all sorts of faces throughout the venue, and the adults stuck their own dialogue onto them.After recording their own voices speaking the lines onto photos taken with iPads, they created a lively “Talking Picture Book.” We watched as the children fully immersed themselves in their roles, coming up with their own lines and experimenting with different voice tones, asking questions like, “What kind of voice should I use?” and “Wouldn’t this line work well?”

The elementary school class focused on “Creating Kanji by Feeling.” When you pay attention to their shapes and origins, kanji are actually creative and interesting. So, let’s try creating our own one-of-a-kind kanji—ones not even found in dictionaries! We prepared a variety of topics for the words to be turned into kanji, such as “TV,” “rain shelter,” and “Tokyo Dome”!The process of “creating kanji” also involves delving deeper into the meaning and essence of words. Even for the same word, people perceive and interpret it differently, so completely different kanji characters end up being created.We also invited adults to take on the challenge of creating kanji alongside the children. It was impressive to see them exchanging ideas for prompts with one another and sharing plenty of feedback on each other’s creations, with comments like, “I see…,” “That’s great,” and “That’s interesting!”

We’re pleased to announce that our Children and Adults Workshop will now be held regularly starting in April! We hope to create a space where children and adults—sometimes together, sometimes separately—can spend time in the same space and discover various ways to think and create together.
