[What Was Created by Inventing New Ways to Break Things?]
Saturday, February 21, was one of our bi-monthly Atelier BAUHAUS sessions. The
theme was “breaking.” We explored what kinds of
objects we could use and how we could break them,
and finally held an exhibition showcasing these methods—the “Ways to Break Things” Exhibition.

The elementary school class began with a student’s statement: “I wanted to be a witch, but when I realized I couldn’t, I decided to become a potter. So recently, I shattered my dream.” The children naturally understood that “shattering” a dream involves not only
physical changes but also changes in function and perspective (feelings).

While talking with everyone, we broadened our understanding of the concept of “breaking,” thought about how to break things while
actually moving our hands, and turned those ideas into tangible forms. At the
final exhibition, a variety of works were on display, including the forms created through breaking and art objects made by utilizing those forms.

It’s been almost a year now, and today I was once again struck by how freely and flexibly you all are able to think and create.
