[Kids Creative Research Institute at Meiji University]
Here’s a report on the “Research Institute in Meiji” event held on Sunday, November 9! This time, we
invited
calligrapher Kotaro Hachinohe to lead the workshops “Let’s Play with Calligraphy” and “Let’s Draw with Calligraphy.”
Using
a large brush and a very thin brush, Mr. Hachi first demonstrated how to draw.
The children were
mesmerized by the sight of Mr. Hachi drawing with such seriousness and dedication, and some of them couldn’t help but exclaim, “Wow…”
The children start by drawing various lines with a single brush.
How can they make a thick line?
How can they make a thin line?
For most of these preschoolers, it’s their first time using a brush and ink. As they drew
more and more, a wide variety of lines began to emerge.
Then, we each chose one character from our names and wrote it down. Our
names are very important.
What matters isn’t writing beautifully, but writing with sincerity. While recalling the lines we practiced
at the beginning, we wrote the characters of our names
many times, and finally
chose our best piece to display on the wall.
Seeing all those characters—each imbued with sincere feeling—lined up side by side was a truly magnificent sight.
