- Learn and Experience “Hand Bookbinding”—A Workshop on Bundling and Stitching
We’re hosting a bookbinding workshop where you can create a notebook that’s one of a kind.
This is an opportunity to explore the world of bookbinding and experience its mechanics and charm firsthand as you work with your hands.
During this season often referred to as “the autumn of art” and “the autumn of reading,” why not enjoy the world of paper and books with all five senses?
What comes to mind when you hear the word “bookbinding”?
Books, notebooks, pamphlets, photo albums… It’s common to see
large quantities of paper bound together, but the mechanics of bookbinding are not widely understood.
Actually, you can easily make them using everyday tools.
For this session, we’ve invited Mayumi Nakamura, a prominent book designer, to teach us about “hand-bound books”—a craft that engages all five
senses.
I hope this will be a place where participants can not only learn about the bookbinding process but also gain insight into the creative process—
from editing and design to other aspects of production—by experiencing the perspective of an editorial designer.
In this workshop, you’ll actually make your own original notebook.
Choose 10 sheets of paper from a selection of about 20 varieties—varying in color, material, and thickness—then fold each one however you like, bundle them together, and sew them with thread.Once you’ve shaped
it and open the notebook… you’ll find a one-of-a-kind notebook where no two pages are exactly
alike! Made
entirely by hand, this notebook has a warm, inviting feel and is sure to lift your spirits every time you open it.
We provide detailed instructions on how to make the items and use the tools, so even first-timers can feel free to join.
Once you’ve finished, you can use it as a notebook, turn it into a photo album by adding pictures, create a collage book, or give it as a wedding or birthday gift—thinking of ways to use it is part of the fun.
By learning about and experiencing bookbinding, you may find that looking at books becomes even more enjoyable, discover the joy of creating them, and feel that your everyday life has become a little richer.
